Climate Adaptation

In an era of climate uncertainty, we provide leaders with the strategies and tools needed to address the impacts of climate change.

Addressing the Escalating Global Crisis

Climate change is a key threat to development. The evolving climate crisis will push millions more into poverty, food insecurity, and other vulnerable situations in the coming years. As the impact of climate change has rapidly accelerating effects such as reduced agricultural capacity, increased water insecurity, and vulnerability to disease, the global community is shifting attention to how we adapt and build resilience to its effects.

Motivating Climate Adaptation Action

The current international response has yet to meet the ambition, funding, and coordination needed to address the compounding issues driven by climate change. Development leaders driving systemic change at the intersection of climate change and other key sectors, such as agriculture, health, and gender, are seeking clarity in how to prioritize their efforts and funding to accelerate effective climate action. SEEK supports clients in navigating this complex ecosystem, better incorporating climate change action into strategies, building support amongst key stakeholders, and encouraging greater spending on climate change action.

The Challenge

The Challenge

Climate Adaptation

The Challenge

Less than 2% of global climate financing goes toward the water sector, mainly due to a lack of evidence on where water problems are and the absence of an enabling environment to attract investors. To respond to this challenge, WaterAid sought to build a global multistakeholder partnership which aims to boost the water security of the world’s most vulnerable by helping them access more climate finance and private capital through holistic, evidence-based water programming. SEEK supported WaterAid in defining the vision and strategy for the partnership and in bringing together stakeholders to set up this partnership. In a later phase, SEEK also supported in launching the initiative and led the interim secretariat.

Our Approach

SEEK supported the WaterAid team in defining an initial vision, mission, and theory of change for the partnership, in consultation with prospective partners. Following the creation of the Resilient Water Accelerator, SEEK then assisted its Interim Steering Group in operationalizing the accelerator. SEEK’s consultants staffed the initial secretariat and assisted in the design of the partnership’s in-country operating model to ensure inclusive and data-driven water program design and helped identify the first wave of countries to receive support from the partnership. SEEK also led the development of the partnership’s long-term strategy, governance structure, and funding model.

Our Impact

Our collaboration with WaterAid resulted in the successful creation of the Resilient Water Accelerator, supported by the African Development Bank, the Global Water Partnership, the World Resource Institute, the UK, the Netherlands, and private sector partners. The Accelerator was announced at COP26 and launched country programs in 2022, after successfully securing funding to put the Accelerator on the path of boosting the resilience of 50 million vulnerable people living in water-stressed areas by 2030.

Climate Adaptation

Dive into a spectrum of focus areas that form the core of our initiatives. Explore these key domains to understand how our targeted efforts contribute to meaningful change and progress.

Climate - Agriculture and food systems

Climate change is negatively impacting food systems, which must adapt to shifting weather patterns and climate shocks. Ensuring stability in the global agricultural value chain is essential for proper nutrition across the globe. We help clients understand and react to these impacts.

Climate - Health

Policymakers and development players are looking to better understand how global health players can best react and adapt to climate shocks and their health effects, including increased disease vulnerability and malnutrition. We support clients in navigating the intersection between these two vital sectors.

Climate - Water and sanitation

Although water is the first sector to be impacted by climate change, it currently receives less than 2% of global climate financing. As the initial measure for climate implications, water serves as the leading sector for climate adaptation innovation. We help clients in their efforts to scale-up climate action in the water and sanitation space.

Climate - Gender

Women and girls experience the most severe impacts of climate change and are often at the forefront of climate adaptation. These impacts amplify existing gender inequalities and pose unique threats to their livelihoods, health, and safety. We work with clients to drive solutions to reduce these inequalities.
